So far the site is looking good. The only things I found problems with were some links related to tabbers/submitting tabs, and what not, but I figure that’s still work under progress.

Also, looking under some band names, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of songs as there used to. Which again, I wouldn’t doubt would be because everything still a work in progress. :)

First impressions are overall very good. I notice that there are a lot of big ads around, but as they are one of the big reasons the site is able to come back up, then technically this would be the first time I’ve ever been glad to see ads.

Aesthetically, it’s much brighter than the old site (to state the obvious). If I’m just looking something up real quick it’s nice, but going through trying to read the reports and updates started to hurt my eyes, and I can’t assume any better if I were to try and study a tab directly on my computer screen. Maybe tone it back a little on the brightness? For all I know though, the white and grey color scheme is most likely just temporary as a low priority thing.

I noticed that there will be a related tab search on the side to suggest other songs similar to the one you are looking at. Supposing it doesn’t just spit out random links like Guitaretabs sometimes seems to do, it could be awesome.

The only thing I can think of to add right now (before going off to dig into the specific workings of the site) is that while manually searching for a song by an artist, scrolling down takes forever because each selection is huge, and there is only one song title per line. In other words, searching manually is tedious at best. Perchance break it into two lines, side by side and reduce the size of the text on title by 2 pts. or so?

Other than that, the site looks great so far! I’ll post more if I find anything post worthy.

There is a known issue where some of the titles have bad performer listings (or none at all). We are looking into this. You can usually find the songs through a title search though (try searching for “Stairway to Heaven” as a title vs. “Led Zeppelin” as an artist and you’ll see what I mean).

First of all, thanks you mxtabs for giving me the opportunity to be an alpha tester. It feels really cool being one of the lucky ones ;)

    Alright, down to business.
On my first impression, the page seemed really big. All of the logos, the tab search bar, etc. It’s not bad or anything, just the first thing I noticed. I also like background of the site. Very simple, yet cool.
The only real negative I’ve experienced so far is the advertisement that nearly takes up the whole screen!
I understand that those ads are helping the site come back, though, so I can deal with them. Just please never get those talking ads. There is nothing more annoying than when you’re learning a song and some voice suddenly goes, “CLICK HERE FOR AN IPOD NANO!!!”. Those drive me insane.
Anyways, overall the site looks great so far! One feature that I noticed and immeadietly LOVED is how when you click on a tab, it goes to the tab and you can click on Guitar, Bass, or Drum. This small little feature makes it so much easier to get all parts of a song at once for a whole band. Very good idea!
Thank you very much, and I can’t wait until the grand opening!

nice job good going champ, keep up the good work.

  5. BigFish says:

things seem to work ok, i just wish there was a list or something letting people know what tabs are up so you don’t spend so much time searching but i know more tabs will come but a list would be nice.

this website (visually) is an upgrade and i like the new organization of the songs and bands!!!!

after time i believe this could be better than the one before!!!

  7. Trevreav says:

Very good looking site, clean and easily navigable.

My only criticisms would be that it seems to take an awful lot of clicks to get anywhere, and if you browse by artist then the page is very, very long. slightly smaller font size and closer leading would do the trick here, as I seemed to be scrolling forever.

All in all an excellent rebirth and well done to everyone involved.

  8. irokzworld says:

This is great! I used to use Mxtabs until it was taken down, but now it feels really cool to be one of the people helping to bring it back to life.

    First
I think the the ad in the middle would be better used as a place to show recent news in music (i.e. Band news, who has singles out, what CD’s are good, etc. etc.) or something to that effect.

    Second
I think everything looks a little oversized.

Third ( and this is something that would be cool to have)
I think there should be a place where you can submit your songs, both lyrics and tabs. That way other people can give you feedback on your song so you know how to make it better. Also it would help if you could put your lyrics and tabs in different spots.

Great job on the rebirth, and i hope it will be fully running soon.

  9. irokzworld says:

Sorry but i just noticed this…
At the top of this page, it says “jump to comment form,” “Comment rss,” and “track back uri”

What do those last 2 mean or is it just a typo?

  10. irokzworld says:

on the main page, where the letters for the bands are, why isn’t there a 0-9 catergory?
some bands dont start with letters and it would be easier to find them if there was a 0-9 section.

  11. Shaldares says:

I have a stupid question… When the site officially goes up, will we get like Alpha Tester titles by our names or something? Because that would be awesome =P

  12. Michael Hylands says:

Hey, I just wanted to wish Merry Christmas to everyone and have a Happy New Year! Hope you’re enjoying yourselves!

  13. ZZ says:

Yeah an alpha logo would be sick, haha. Happy Holidays.

  14. ZZ says:

Oh, also I have something I think should be morphed a little, just a small thing, only thing I’ve found wrong, others have to. After I search a band and check off an instrument, it shows all songs, not just tabs with my instrument.

  15. Joe says:

    Hey,

Who is this band “Unsigned”? They have over 3,000 TABs on the site. I’ve never heard of them. Are they a real band?

    Joe

  16. Frosti says:

I see when im trying to check some tabs. I cant see them they arent legalised in Iceland…why is that? And can you fix it?

  17. Bill says:

One of the reasons we don’t list which tabs are available is because there are a lot of tabs that also need data and that might go up once we get the data. Maybe we can figure out some way to display how many tabs need data vs. how many are available vs. how many are not available at all right now.

If we do this, we’d have to do it on a song-level though, as we may have rights to some songs by a band but not others, depending on the quality of data and who the songwriters are or what publisher they were with for that specific song.

We’ll think about it… but right now we want to focus on getting the site working properly more than anything.

  18. Bill says:

People who have been key in the rebirth and MXTabs in general will definitely be recognized in one way or another. Don’t worry – we’ll make our appreciation known.

  19. Bill says:

    @ZZ

I noticed this same thing with search and it’s on our list of things to fix. It was working before, but likely got changed when we fixed something else. Thanks for reminding me though.

  20. Bill says:

    @ Frosti:

    Please see the post: http://blog.mxtabs.net/2008/02/27/welcome-to-the-public-alpha-of-mxtabs/

    Specifically:

Tabs are only available for display in the U.S.

We know a lot of you are not going to like this one… and we don’t either. But trust us when we say we’re working on expanding tab displays to areas outside the U.S. Copyright laws work differently in every country, and right now we’re focusing on the U.S. – but we do have licenses to display some of our tabs outside the U.S. currently, we just don’t know which ones yet.

Users outside the U.S. can now at least see the rest of the site and get an idea of what we’re doing… the closed alpha was completely restricted to U.S. only.

This will all change for the better in the future.
