Song Tab of Matador Recording Artists

Matador Records, the subject of this week’s song tab of independent record label recording artists, has had a somewhat curious 20 year history. Founded in 1989 by Chris Lombardi (who soon after teamed up with Gerard Cosloy, former manager of Homestead Records), Matador found unexpected success with two of the first bands signed to the label: Superchunk and Teenage Fan Club. Shortly thereafter, the label signed Pavement and Liz Phair, further solidifying their place as one of the premier indie record labels.

When the grunge explosion of the late 1980s/early 1990s sent industry moguls scurrying to find the next big, “underground” act, Matador found themselves entering into an agreement with one of the industry big boys, Atlantic Records. When this agreement ended, Matador decided to give another major-label deal a try, this time with Capitol Records. Thus, for a good part of the 1990s, our beloved indie record label was no longer independent! Alas, the union with Capitol was dissolved in 1999, and Matador Records has remained an indie label ever since [SOURCE: Matador Records Profile, About.com].

Whether as a major label or an indie label, one thing has remained constant: Matador Records impressive artist roster. What follows is but a small taste of the diversity of artists they represent.
